The health, safety and wellbeing of all our stakeholders is our utmost priority, and we continue to monitor and act according to direction provided by the federal, provincial and municipal governments to control the spread of COVID-19.

RioCan is well positioned to navigate this challenging time, as our resilient major market portfolio and solid balance sheet help mitigate the impact of economic volatility. Desirable locations, and a necessity-based and service-oriented tenant mix comprised largely of national retailers, provide inherent income stability. These attributes, combined with the strength of our experienced leadership team, have made us successful for 27 years and will see us through the COVID-19 crisis, fueling growth long into the future.

Our shopping centres are community pillars and have been critical to delivering essential services throughout the pandemic.

We actively support our tenants and employees and ensure they have the information required to operate safely, and in compliance with public health measures. For the foreseeable future, our tenants are adhering to a range of heightened health and safety protocols such as full compliance with all mandated sanitation, physical distancing and self-screening measures. Details are as follows:

Shopping Centres:

There continues to be fluidity regarding business operation, with guidance varying by region. With continued mandated and partial shutdowns, some retailers have chosen to adjust their operating hours. We encourage guests to check shopping centre websites and social channels or contact retailers directly for up-to-date information on hours of operation.

To safeguard guests, tenants and employees, RioCan has implemented enhanced safety protocols that follow the guidance of our provincial and municipal health authorities. These include:

  • Prominent signage and markers to enforce respectful physical distancing, and facial coverings where mandated by municipal authorities
  • Processes and signage to enforce vaccine passport requirements where mandated by municipal authorities
  • Increased cleaning of frequent touchpoints, such as entrance door handles and washroom fixtures
  • Increased hand sanitization stations
  • Common seating areas such as food court tables and chairs have been removed, or access has been restricted
  • Certain shopping centre services, such as stroller rental, typically provided by our Guest Services teams, have been eliminated
  • Modified events and programming to ensure proper physical distancing, safety and cleaning protocols

RioCan also introduced Curbside Collect in 2020. RioCan Curbside Collect is a safe and convenient way for retail tenants and consumers to transact. The program offers designated areas for customers to easily access their pre-ordered items from participating stores at applicable RioCan centres in a contactless way.

RioCan Living Residential Rental Buildings:

The professional third-party property management teams that manage our RioCan Living residential rental portfolio have implemented a number of initiatives to ensure the health, safety and security of employees and residential tenants, including:

  • Increased cleaning intensity and frequency
  • Cancellation or postponement of all tenant gatherings and closure of amenity spaces
  • Adjustments to leasing tour strategies, including enhanced virtual tour capability

RioCan Development Projects:

RioCan’s construction projects remain underway. RioCan continues to monitor development progress daily to ensure worker safety and accommodate labour limitations, and will make necessary adjustments as circumstances around COVID-19 evolve. We have full confidence in our Construction Managers that oversee these sites.

RioCan Employees:

RioCan continues to monitor and adjust to federal, provincial, and municipal regulations with respect to COVID-19 and the workplace. As vaccination rates have increased, and cases continue to decline, many of the more stringent measures put in place have begun to loosen. RioCan continues to adapt to the changing measures and reopening guidelines.

Effective Monday, September 13, 2021 we reopened our offices for all employees to return. This means that, for a period of time, and subject to continued clearance from government and health officials, our employees have the option of either returning to the office full time, or gradually returning to the office through a number of hybrid work from home and office options. To maintain our commitment to support our business, tenants and communities, employees who are essential to the operation of our shopping centers are required to work onsite.

The health and safety of our people is paramount, and we continue to follow public health direction. We have also facilitated access to RioCan’s Employee Assistance Program to help employees manage any anxiety and stress they may be experiencing.

We provide frequent communication from the leadership team through a number of channels including email updates, FAQs and conference calls. These communications provide real-time information, updates regarding protocol, and keep RioCan employees connected to the business and each other.
