Property Tax Analyst

Toronto, ON

Reporting to the Director, Real Estate Taxes, this position will handle tax analysis for RioCan properties, including appeals, information requests, etc., across a national portfolio.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviewing tax bills for correctness
  • Analyzing the impact of assessment reductions on tax bills
  • Following up on refunds due to successful appeals or municipal act applications and ensuring correctness of same
  • Performing impact studies regarding tax appeals and making recommendations as appropriate
  • Collect municipal tax information as required, such as capping parameters and tax rates
  • Assist team members with overflow work during periods of heavy demand
  • File applications and appeals as required
  • Maintain the Property Tax Department’s assessment and taxation database
  • Co-ordination of assessment information with the Assessment and Appeals Clerk especially recording changes that have an impact on valuation and tax charges
  • Submission of information to relevant tax authorities and tax consultants in co-ordination with the Assessment and Appeals Clerk
  • Record and monitor decisions of the Assessment Review Board
  • Attending Assessment Review Board Hearings on Municipal Act matters and filing of all relevant documentation in support of the appeal
  • Set-up and continued maintenance of logs, reports, and values that are required by various departments
  • Keeping up to date on relevant tax legislation and assessing the impact of the legislation on RioCan tax issues
  • Other projects or assignments as required


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • University or College degree
  • 3 to 5 years proven experience performing property tax analysis
  • Strong mathematical and basic accounting skills
  • In-depth knowledge of provincial tax legislation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; ability to do in-depth spreadsheet analysis
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word; familiarity with Adobe Acrobat is an asset
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Team player
  • An AIMA or CMTP designation is an asset
